Box Score

San Diego - San Diego State parlayed a 17-hit attack with some stellar long relief work by senior John Skinner to defeat UNLV, 11-0, at Earl Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas Friday night.

The victory improved the Aztecs to 12-9 on the year and evened their Mountain West Conference record at 2-2. The Rebels, who lost for only the second time in their last seven games, fell to 11-13 overall. The loss was UNLV's first league setback of the season after they swept Air Force in a three-game series in Las Vegas last weekend to open conference play.

Although the Aztec offense had one of its best outings of the season, it was Skinner's performance that was the story. The senior from Dublin, Calif, came on in the second inning with one out after starter Chris Dunwell was hit in the forearm by a line drive and was forced to leave the game. Over his 7.2 innings of relief work, Skinner (1-0) allowed only two hits and walked none while striking out 10 Rebel batters to record his first win of the season.

Offensivley, seniors Andy Litteral and Darrell Bowles each got his first start of the season, and both made the most of the opportunity, Litteral went 3-for-6 with a single, double and triple while Bowles also went 3-for-6 with an RBI and run scored.

Eight of SDSU's nine starters collected at least one hit and all nine scored at least one run in the win. Carlo Cota contributed a single and double, and increased his ream RBI lead to 24 with three on the night. Chad Redfern also notched three RBIs, with two of those coming on his first home run of the season in the eighth inning.

San Diego State and UNLV continue their three-game series in Las Vegas Saturday afternoon (Mar. 17) at 1:00 p.m. and conclude the set with a contest on Sunday (Mar. 18) at the same time.
