May 14, 2009 SAN DIEGO - Citing progress by its student athletes both in competition and in the classroom, San Diego State has extended athletic director Jeff Schemmel's contract by three years. Schemmel, who has had one year remaining on his contract, will serve as the SDSU Aztecs athletic director through at least 2013. Schemmel and the university agreed to the contract extension today. Schemmel's base pay will remain unchanged but he will have the opportunity to make more in incentive payments based on meeting specific predetermined performance objectives. "Jeff has been a great leader of our athletic department," said SDSU President Stephen L. Weber. "He's made some terrific coaching hires, most recently Brady Hoke (football) and Deitre Collins-Parker (volleyball). He has been consistent in ensuring our student athletes meet the rigid academic standards we set for them. This past year our student athletes have seen unprecedented academic success - thanks in large part to Jeff's leadership." The Aztecs recently announced that of the school's 18 intercollegiate sports, 11 set school records for their highest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). For the first time in school history, all 18 sports had a single-year score of 900 or better, including 17 sports that surpassed a 925 single-year rate. A school-record tying four programs - women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf and softball - received a perfect 1,000 score. The women's golf program, which had a perfect 1,000 score for its multi-year rate, received an NCAA public recognition award. Schemmel, who joined SDSU in July 2005, is credited with setting the Aztecs athletics program on the right course. Key hires made by Schemmel include: Deitre Collins-Parker, Mike Friesen (women's soccer), Mike Shrader (swimming and diving coach), and Brady Hoke. Schemmel also negotiated contract extensions for coaches Beth Burns (women's basketball), Steve Fisher (men's basketball) and Tony Gwynn (baseball). In addition, Schemmel helped bring the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament to SDSU's Cox Arena this March when the Aztecs won their first round game against DePaul. Meanwhile, the men's basketball program finished one of its best years ever reaching the NIT final four, and three sports (baseball, men's golf and water polo) have all been ranked in the top 25 this spring. "I am honored and grateful that President Weber thinks enough of what we are doing and where we are going to extend my contract an additional three years," said Schemmel. "My colleagues in Athletics and I have made considerable progress, but there is much yet to be done. I look forward with unbridled enthusiasm to working with the bright, talented and motivated coaches and staff who have made it their common goal to take San Diego State Athletics to unparalleled heights."
