Scam Artists Targeting Aztec Fans' Generosity
May 2, 2008 SAN DIEGO - Individuals claiming to be associated with the San Diego State baseball team have been going around area neighborhoods soliciting donations on behalf of the team. The athletic department was made aware of the fraudulent claims when individuals called the department to confirm the authenticity of the request. SDSU has now contacted local authorities. The San Diego State athletic department has not, nor will it go door-to-door to solicit funds for any cause. If you have any questions on the authenticity of a donation to the SDSU athletic department, contact the Aztec Athletic Foundation at (619) 594-6444. "It is disappointing that these scam artists would prey on the generosity of our fans to try to steal their money," athletic director Jeff Schemmel said. "Anyone who has any questions on the authenticity of claims someone is making on behalf of the athletic department should contact us directly before proceeding." In one example, two suspects claimed they played baseball for the University and that they are raising money to go to Maui. The Aztecs baseball team does not play in Hawaii this season and has not played on the island since February, 2006. |
