The future is here with the building of a new softball stadium on the west side of the San Diego State University campus. The buildings next to Tony Gwynn Stadium were razed and when the 2005 softball season rolled around, a brand-new lighted facility opened as the new home for SDSU softball.
The stadium, which the Aztecs opened up on Feburary 17, 2005, has 300 permanent seats (150 stadium and 150 bench-back). Bleacher seats and mounded landscape lies behind a five-foot green outfield fence. The total capacity of the facility is 1,000 with room to add 1,000 more seats.
Lighted batting cages and bullpens are available for each team and a tree-lined concourse graces the path between the new stadium and baseball’s Tony Gwynn Stadium. Concessions and restrooms are shared with Tony Gwynn Stadium.
John and Becky Moores, owners of the San Diego Padres, donated approximately $2.5 million for the facility.
