San Diego State University Student-Athlete Academic Support Services employs mentors who work with first-year, new transfer, and some upperclass student-athletes. The mentors help student-athletes balance their athletic and academic endeavors via weekly individual meetings in which they review:
- Student-athletes' time management skills and the priority of their academic assignments
- Student-athltes' schduling of tutor appointments
- The status of each class in which a student-athlete is enrolled
- Any assigned course readings
- Any further course assignments
- Any visits they have made or need to make with a professor
- The student-athlete's planner/calendar
- Academic and personal challenges facing the student-athlete in the upcoming weeks
- The student-athlete's studying techniques, including:
- Creating flash cards
- Reading with the student-athlete
- Reviewing class notes
- Quizzing the student-athlete
- Assisting in the creation of outlines for papers/assignments
- The student-athlete's communication with their Academic Advisors
